There are many directors who
are fascinated with certain locations, terrain or types of people. Names
like J.P.Dutta {Rajhasthan}, Ram Gopal Varma {Mumbai}, Yash Chopra
{Switzerland}, Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra {Delhi}, etc. One more addition
to this group is Tigmanshu Dhulia who loves to weave his stories around
Uttar Pradesh. His Latest offering brings the story which has shades of
classic novel “Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam” but set in today’s times with the
backdrop of U.P. After directors like Anuraag Kashyap and few more who
played around with novels like Devdas and stuffs, can we have something
unique to view or might just end up as a mockery to the classic ? Let’s
find out.
“Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster” is
story of Saheb Aditya Pratap Singh {Jimmy Shergil} who’s ancestor once
ruled the local area. Struggling through his financial problems and arch
rivalry with Genda Singh {Vipin Sharma} he has no time for his
wife/Begum {Mahi Gill}. Begum is suffering from loneliness and in always
trying to seek Saheb’s attention and love. Genda Singh plans to
eliminate Saheb and thus plans his guy Babloo {Randeep Hooda} in Saheb’s
house. Babloo is assigned to drive Begum’s car, but slowly things start
taking different shape and Babloo is attracted towards Begum. Saheb on
other side has a mistress {Shreya Narayan} and thus hardly has time for
Begum. An illicit affair starts between Begum and Babloo leading to lots
of twist and turns in this tale of revenge, lust and love.
Story has backdrop of “Saheb
Biwi Aur Ghulam” but twisted totally to today’s time with lots of fresh
elements and backdrop. The later character changes the whole definition
of the classic tale to story of adultery and two timing. Screenplay is
tight and keeps you engrossed in the film. Though the story line falls
flat in middle part of the second half. Scenes like Jimmy Planning with
Jaiswal, Jimmy’s scenes with his stepmom, Jimmy’s first meet with
Randeep, Jimmy at Minister’s office and later arguments with Vipin
Sharma, Randeep and Mahi’s plans to plant suspicion on Jimmy’s mind,
Randeeps frustration over Lalwani, Randeeps Plan followed by the finale
are among the best highlights of the film. On the flip side the story
graph slides down post interval, falling flat in comparision to the
fiery first half. Also the character of Babloo is not proper explained
and thus leaves some loop holes over the execution part. Editing is
perfect and could had been bit better in the second half. Camera work is
very nice and gives full justice to the movie plot.
Music is fine but one might only remember Jugni which is the most popular song of the film. On personal basis Raat Mujhe and Oh Foo, followed by Le Akhiyan are very good and goes well with the flow of the film. Ajab Sa chakkar and Kuwa Khudwa do are ok.

Tigmashu Dhulia gave us a fresh
and great film like Haasil; Even his Charas had some good spark. But
then his sudden disappearance from the box office and release of delayed
film like Shagird, left film lovers wondering. Thankfully he is back
with his latest flick, where one can find the director back in action.
His way of treating this subject is superb and as an audience who love a
good thriller will be total satisfied.
Jimmy Shergil is superb in this
film. His dialog delivery, his screen presence, His style, Attitude
every goes so well with the character. You got to watch this movie for
him. We wish and pray to see more of this fine actor. Mahi Gill has
expertise as a seductive women, out here too she charms with her
sensuous looks and passionate scenes. Randeep Hooda is fine and does his
part very well, but he could have done it much better. Shreya Narayan
looks beautiful. Vipin Sharma looked misfit and caricature as a villain.
Deepraj Rana is fantastic. Deepal Shaw is wasted. Mukesh Tyagi acts his
best only in Madhur Bhandarkar’s films.
So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai Dum ?
Dum hai Bahut zyaada dum hai.
With fine performance from Jimmy Shergil, Spell bounding charms by Mahi
Gill, Thrilling direction by Tighmanshu Dhulia – This movie deserves to
be watched. It’s not a classic or out of this world type film {Thanks to
some flaws in the script and weak music score}, but for people who love
films of such genre, this movie is a pure treat. The Sharp Eye {meaning
of Tighmanshu} of the film maker leaves the mark In his audience mind.
Oh and for all those who are planning to watch it for those Steamy
scenes [shared on YouTube], you might not be totally pleased, but won’t
be disappointed either.
