Prominent file sharing sites such as Rapid Share and Media Fire were blockedby major ISPs such as Airtel, MTNL and other service providers earliertoday. The decision to block these websites was a result of a Delhi HighCourt’s order to stop the piracy of Ajay Devgn, Kajal and Prakash Rajstarrer Singham which has been produced by Reliance BIG Pictures. The mediagiant approached the Delhi High Court and got a “John Doe” order allowingthem to service cease and desist notices on movie pirates pirating the film.The John Doe order enforces Internet Service Providers to take all possiblemeasures to ensure that the film isn’t pirated and it also covers peopleselling pirated DVDs and cable operators. A John Doe order is given againstunidentified people, because the copyright owner doesn’t know who is goingto infringe. The interesting part is, ISPs aren’t forced to block the entirewebsite or file sharing sites. The John Doe order necessitates that the ISPs
ensure that only the film isn’t pirated.
While this order has had a direct affect on some internet users in India,many haven’t experienced blockade of fire sharing sites, yet. This isprobably the first time in recent few months where a John Doe order has beenissued to prevent piracy on the internet. The film, Singham is going to hitthe screens on July 22 and it has already generated a good buzz from earlyscreenings in Mumbai.
