Dashing opener, Virender Sehwag has been chosen to lead the India squad
against the West Indies in the first 3 ODIs of the five match ODI
series. Seniors, MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar have been rested while
Yuvraj Singh misses out due to an illness.
"Sachin Tendulkar has been rested. Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been rested for the series. Yuvraj Singh was not considered for selection, as he has informed that he is not fully fit," BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale informed in a media release.
The selectors went in with the same squad that played routed England 5-0 in the ODIs with the only change being Sehwag in place of Dhoni. Sehwag had said way back that he was not keen on captaining the side and the Indian selectors have had the likes of Suresh Raina and Gautam Gambhir handling the team in Dhoni's absence in recent times. The decision to make Sehwag captain will surely come as a surprise to many.
Ajinkya Rahane who has impressed many during his short career will get another chance at cementing his spot at the top of the order while Manoj Tiwary too will be desperate for a good outing against the Calypso Kings. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will look to continue his good form after shining against England and in the domestic circuit.
Young leg-spinner Rahul Sharma was included in the 15 man squad and he will partner R Ashwin in the spin department while Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar and Varun Aaron will vie for a spot alongside Praveen Kumar in the pace department.
The first three ODIs will be played at Cuttack, Vishakapatnam and Ahmedabad respectively.
